Here’s a lovely article from this week’s Westside News.
Thumbs up for a new program
Little Lucia Sandstrom’s dreams came true at the weekend. The eight-year-old from Ashgrove was chosen as the junior mascot for the St George Queensland Reds’ first home game of the season.
Lucia is the first girl to play in a new modified form of rugby at GPS Ashgrove – a program developed to encourage boys and girls with learning and perceptual difficulties to be able to play rugby at their local clubs.
The program was started by Brisbane charity GingerCloud Foundation and Brothers Junior Rugby Club in 2014 and now, with a $50,000 donation from St George Foundation, it will expand to four clubs across Brisbane in 2015.
“The modified rugby program is all about helping families, just like Lucia’s, belong in rugby,” GingerCloud founding director Megan Elliott said. “With the generous grant from St George Foundation and the ongoing support of Queensland Rugby, many more families with children who learn and perceive differently will be able to be part of the truly inspiring rugby community.” St George will be supporting junior players from the modified rugby program for each home game, offering junior mascot chances and tickets throughout 2015.
